Lilla Rogers Global Talent Search

That exciting time has come round again, if your a designer/illustrator this could be your big break to get your work out there and seen by thousands. The best bit?... you could win international representation by the fantastic Lilla Rogers Studio! This is an opportunity I couldn't pass up, even with only 3 days to create my submission. Just back off my travels, I set to work doodling and playing around with ink and watercolour brush pens. The theme for round 1 was 'Little Terrariums' this gave me images of small blooms curled and tangled in a pretty circle of glass...after much deliberation and various layouts, I went with this little creation as my final piece. I hope you enjoy 'Blooming Wonderful.'

Imagine A Mystical Circus...

Hello, I've been a little quiet lately, so thought I'd share some of the designs I've been developing recently. I've been working on some children's designs based on 2014/15 trends for girls. As a starting point I used the fabulous Emily Kiddy's trend predictions on young fashion for my initial inspiration. Emily's blog shares her work and passion for design, print, graphic, trend, illustration and photography and is a wonderful bubble of inspiration and eye candy for any designer.

I had a lot of fun collating these designs. I absolutely adore the watercolour dress-up animals by Deidre Wicks. After a little deliberation I decided to go with the Mystical circus theme first. I am currently working on some designs for Imagination and will share as soon as possible!
...first here are some of the designs I have developed for the Mystical Circus theme...

I was very much inspired by Deidre Wicks dress-up animals, so I began playing around with charactrers and dressing them up in tutus and bow ties. I also doodled on paper to create the circus tent in more detail. After playing around with mark making for the smaller elements I built up the repeat print which gave me the ideas for these cute placement prints. I hope you enjoy the designs and feel free to leave feedback or comments... I'll be back shortly to share the next section of work with you!

This is my most recent entry for the Talenthouse collaboration with Always. The brief was to design packaging for Always Dailies Discreet. My design Rose & Heather incorporates a delicate floral print that I would hope appeals to the Always customer. The colours were chosen to complement the Always branding and also to give the packaging a fresh, feminine and appealing aesthetic. The intent was for the design to stand out on the shelf but also blend in nicely in the bathroom or discreetly in the customer handbag.

Voting is now open until 31st! So please do check it out and to vote click HERE! Thanks a bunch! :)

Lilla Rogers Global Talent Search

I've been busy recently working on my submission for Lilla Rogers Global Talent Search. This is an amazing opportunity for artists to work on a professional brief and have the possibility of winning 2 years representation with Lilla Rogers Studio, including various licensing deals and notoriety.

The 1st Assignment was to design a journal cover for Paperchase with the theme being anything to do with tradition playground items.

My starting point was to collect some images to get a feel for what were my favourite playground items and get an idea of the Paperchase style.

From my moodboard I began drawing some general ideas and testedout a few characters along the way.

Finally I settled on using my drawing of the horse-on-a-spring as the main focus and here is my final piece!

I used a contrasting colour palette - trying to keep in mind the advice Lilla had provided with the brief. As a surface pattern designer I wanted to get a little bit of print in there to create a colourful back drop to my piece. I did a lot of swapping and changing and tried to keep my illustration vibrant and fun by using the floral elements to provide an outside/garden feel.

I thoroughly enjoyed this assignment and its definitely brought out another side to my work.
Thanks so much for taking a look and good luck to all the artist who have entered!

Patterned Type Shortlist!

I've been entering Tigerprint's fab competitions again and have managed to get shortlisted! I really enjoy participating in these competitions. I like to challenge myself with with new design briefs and love the varied projects that Tigerprint come up with. Even if you don't get shortlisted its a nice way to keep new ideas flowing and challenge yourself with something that might be out of your comfort zone.

This design brief was to create a patterned type suitable for cards, bags and gift wrap. I played around with my handwriting and created a flowing type and designed some patterned elements to be applied to this. My final alphabet is called I feel fancy. Check out my designs below. Click here to see the shortlisted designs  :)

Ambition and Work Experience!

Apologies for being so quiet at the start of 2013, I have had a few things going on this year and have been busy taking the first few steps toward fulfilling my creative ambitions.

First of all I had the pleasure of securing a work placement with the fantastic Tigerprint Studio at Hallmark HQ. This came about due to one of my designs winning their October Black and White Competition (see posts below).

I unfortunately can't share what I worked on but I can share my experience. I had an amazing time with them, working on varying briefs including 3D Product and Surface Pattern Design. I had amazing fun learning new techniques and playing around with foil and flitter, researching trends and mocking up card, bag and wrap designs. It was really good to see how all the Tigerprint creative departments work together and how everyone works as a team. I hope to work in an environment like that one day!

I also got the chance to become a Tigerprint judge for the Spots and Stripes Competition, which was great to experience how each design is evaluated and narrowed down to the selected runners up and winners. (Tigerprint now has a new competition page you can find by clicking here.)

Overall this was such a valuable experience and I am so glad I did it, I am now looking for further work placements and also hope to work with Tigerprint in the future.

My second step has been to research art licencing companies, with the aim of getting a licencing deal but this is early days and I have a lot more research to do and I'm currently building on my existing portfolio of work. If anyone has any advice on this area, I am new to this, so it would be gratefully received!

Other areas I am looking into are Spoonflower, Society6 and to initially test my designs in the market, without too much outlay.

I will keep sharing my experiences with you here and if you have anything to contribute please feel free to comment below....Thanks for listening! :)

Merry Christmas From Loulalo!

Apologies for the lack of posts recently...been a busy bee on the run up to Christmas as probably most of you have too. Just wanted to share some of the Christ-massy designs I've worked on recently. Inspired by love at Christmas. I wanted to depict a traditional image with a modern and fun touch, hence Mr and Mrs Claus having fun under the mistletoe.

Hope you enjoy ;)

'Black is the new white'

Here are a few designs I came up with for the Black and White design brief from this months Tigerprint Competition. This brief was for an overall print design using a limited colour palette. I experimented with different media such as hand drawn doodles using pencil and ink and drawings using a graphics tablet, these were then manipulated to create these fun repeat prints.

I am proud to say that out of just over 600 entries, two of my designs Ruffle and Dark Ruffle made it into the top 25 designs, with Dark ruffle actually winning this months competition! :) To see the winning entry and the lovely entries by the runners up, click here!

Tigerprint - Male Fashion Icons and Symbols

Here are some of my most recent surface pattern designs for this months Tigerprint Competition. The brief was to create designs inspired by male fashion, icons and symbols for the contemporary male send. Using 2013 colour and trend inspiration my aim was to create a colour popping but retro collection of patterns that would appeal to today's male recipients.
